Sophia Handaka

Sophia Handaka is co-Founder of KOΛEKTIVA. She is Curator of World Cultures at the Benaki Museum, Athens and Co-Founder of the CoMuseum International Conference. Her energy focuses on creating the conditions for collaboration and empowerment of communities, advocating for the social impact of museums and cultural organisations with diversity, equality, inclusion, and accessibility at the centre.

Holding a DPhil from the University of Oxford in Social Anthropology with a focus on museums and material culture, Sophia has for 25 years engaged with the arts, culture, heritage and creativity through numerous exhibitions, publications, public programs, research and development projects, cultural synergies, consulting and teaching. She is co-writer of a study of the Greek Cultural and Creative Sector, including policy proposals, commissioned by independent think-tank diaNEOsis (in Greek here). For 2017-2019 she collaborated with the City of Athens through R.O.C.K. project, to enhance access to culture by empowering bottom-up initiatives. From 2005-2007 she taught at the University of Thessaly, Dept of History, Archaeology & Social Anthropology.

Sophia has been invited in selection juries, workshops, consultations and public talks. She is member of Bosch Alumni Network, Solidarity in Action Network and a 2019 Fellow of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program.
